India had already amazed us with its beauty and culture, but little did we know the Journey is just about to begin. In a remarkable achievement, eight distinct Indian beaches were awarded the prestigious Blue Flag certification in July 2019, solidifying the country’s commitment to eco-tourism and beach conservation.
The decision was made by a panel of eminent international judges consisting of members from the United Nations Environment Programme, United Nations World Tourism Organisation, Foundation of Environmental Education, and the International Union for Conservation of Nature.
This recognition, a testament to India’s dedication to sustainability and environmental protection, propelled the nation onto the global stage as a leader in coastal management.
As mentioned before, not one but eight beaches in India have received this recognition in 2019, which was an amazing achievement for the country and as of January 2024, India boasts 12 prestigious Blue Flag beaches, recognized globally for their exceptional water quality, effective environmental management, stringent safety standards, and unwavering commitment to sustainable tourism.
Prakash Javadekar, the Union Minister of Environment, Forests and Climate Change, at that time had reported that this was a first for India. Even for the other blue flag countries, none have been awarded for eight beaches in a single attempt. It also signifies the steps India has been consistently taking towards sustainability and conservation of natural resources, especially with the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan initiated by the Prime Minister of the country, Narendra Modi.

What is the Blue Flag Certification?
The Blue Flag certification is an eco-label that is presented to a beach, marina, or sustainable boating tourism operator. The certification was predominantly initiated by the Foundation for Environmental Education in Denmark.
The certification is awarded annually to the beaches and marinas in FEE member countries.
The main objective behind the Blue Flag program is to promote sustainability concerning the freshwater and marine areas across the world. It abides by four governing rules of water quality, environmental management, environmental education, and safety.
